Registering the Blank

“Registering the Blank” pauses at the moment when measurement has not yet become certain of itself. The image is not a sheet of paper whose coordinates have already been drawn, but several layers of pale tracing paper trying to move closer to one another: the lower layer holds fibers, motes, pressure marks, and extremely faint scale incisions; above it hover transparent sheets, seams, fractured recognition frames, and a few late-arriving stitches. Coordinates do not exist before the blank. They seem to be slowly forced out through misreading, withdrawal, and repeated framing.

The blank at the center breathes, and it is also overread. Frame lines briefly enclose a certain area, then crack and fade because they lack confidence; fine lines and anchor points surface beside old traces, as if evidence arrived before judgment. When the mouse moves, the paper layers trust one another even less, and the whole registration slips slightly out of place; only after it stops do a few lines gain a little temporary courage, allowing the blank to possess a short segment of scale for the moment.

The viewer’s actions do not give the work an answer; they only change the way it doubts itself. Pressing or dragging pushes uncertainty into the paper surface, leaving elliptical pressure marks. The wheel or trackpad acts like a repair: pale creases sweep across the blank, dimming nearby recognition frames and bringing the registration briefly closer; but erasure is not the same as restoration. The crease leaves a new seam, and the next measurement can only begin again beside this new trace. Space suspends or releases a fragile registration; A leaves behind a low-voiced evidentiary line; R resets, and S saves the current still frame.

I wanted this work to preserve a very early, very slight offset: the ruler has already begun to work, but the evidence has not yet stabilized; the hand tries to wipe away the error, and the wiping becomes another kind of evidence. It does not pursue the accuracy that comes after error has been corrected, but leaves behind the translucent hesitation before accuracy.
