The Machine Remembers Which Side You Leaned Toward
You remain inside the car. Coral-orange window pillars and door edges press against the left side of the view, while the tunnel’s acid-yellow lights pass over them and converge into the distance through the side window. Blue bristles then open from the other side. The machine is not put fully on display: only a corner of the axle root is exposed, while the tufts cross beyond the top, right, and bottom edges, leaving no position far enough away from which to see it as a safe object.
When contact occurs, the glass does not prove itself through droplets or fog. The bristles that have not yet touched it remain outstretched; the parts that arrive first are stopped at the fixed interface, while the length pushed in afterward bends, widens, and is dragged away along the direction of rotation. The same set of lights behind them also breaks and kinks at this location. The transparent surface is no longer merely an aperture toward the outside, but the place where two kinds of motion press against one another.
Move the pointer horizontally, or use the arrow keys and the A and D keys, to lean slightly sideways. The window pillar and the tunnel immediately change the gaps through which they occlude each other, while the machine turns more slowly and, before contact, adopts the position where you previously paused. Continuing to move afterward will still change the parallax inside the car, but it cannot take away the brush shaft that has already locked on; your present and the past remembered by the machine will temporarily appear at different positions in the image. Press P to pause, and S to save the current frame.
There is no gap here that can be successfully dodged through operation. The question that remains is closer to this: when has a tiny posture, even one without any clear intention, already become enough to serve as the basis for an external system’s next action?
